Are data-driven industries sustainable when it comes to the efficiency and fair use of data or the respect of ethical standards? Are there sustainable business models that can be an alternative to big techs? How can the “data sustainability” of internet-based companies be evaluated?
This conference, at the inauguration of the new Course on “Data Sustainability” at EDHEC Business School, aims to readapt the concept of “sustainability” in the field of data protection and in particular with the idea of using fewer, more accurate, pertinent and purpose-centred data to run the digital market. A sustainable data processing is a system that implements the principles of fairness, data minimisation, purpose limitation, accuracy, still being attractive and competitive in the digital market. This conference will explore these realities, looking at existing experiences in the online market (search engines, browsers, PIMS, data lockers) as virtuous examples of data sustainability.
The conference, co-hosted by the Brussels Privacy Hub and the EDHEC Augmented Law Institute, will be based on: introductory remarks from distinguished Professors, followed by a panel with several speakers from academia, industry, civil society and institutions (the EDPS), and some final remarks from Prof. Paul De Hert.
