Brussels Privacy Hub is proud to announce a Roundtable with Ms. Nuala O’Connor, President and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology, on “Current Privacy and Security Challenges in the United States, Belgium, and the EU” on 4 June 2018 from 14:00 – 16:00.
Belgium, the EU and the United States are facing the dual challenges of ensuring public security and protecting the privacy and data rights that are fundamental to our democracies. Policy makers and regulators are working on responses on several fronts. In Europe, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and its companion, the directive on data protection in criminal investigations (Law Enforcement Directive), will now be enforced by European Data Protection Authorities. In addition, the European Commission’s recent proposal on e-Evidence has been launched. On the other side of the Atlantic, the United States recently adopted the CLOUD Act, putting an end to the Supreme Court’s deliberations on the reach of warrants issued by law enforcement beyond US borders. The issues and challenges on law enforcement, security, and privacy are set to continue to evolve with new technologies and business models.
Ms. O’Connor, who is visiting Brussels at the invitation of the German Marshall Fund of the United States as part of a program with the US Embassy to strengthen the Belgium-US dialogue on data protection, has a wealth of experience to bring to these issues. She is the leader of a highly reputed NGO dedicated to protecting privacy, was the first Chief Privacy Officer of the Department of Homeland Security, and has extensive additional background both in government (the US Department of Commerce) and the private sector (DoubleClick, General Electric and Amazon).
This roundtable is a chance for dialogue on achieving that balance between security and privacy and participants are invited to join in this important dialogue.

Venue: Room 4C306, 4th Floor, Building C, Law and Criminology Faculty, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
