Summer school

European Data Protection Law Summer School

The Brussels Privacy Hub (BPH)’s European Data Protection Law Summer School is the only Summer School fully devoted to European data protection law and policy taking place in Brussels, gathering each year in the capital of Europe participants from all over the world interested in knowing how to apply but also how to situate, and think beyond, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Combining lectures by internationally recognised speakers, hand-on practical cases, and role-playing, it brings students directly into the heart of European Union’s legal and policy-making to give them a full-fledged vision of the challenges and opportunities of EU’s data protection, and its global role.

During five days, participants explore EU’s primary and secondary law, and engage with a variety of stakeholders ranging from practitioners with worldwide privacy expertise, representatives of key EU institutions including the European Commission and the European Parliament, data protection authorities among which the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), digital rights advocates, and leading academics from Europe and beyond. It also provides a unique opportunity to network with, and learn from, equally interested participants.

Building on the success of its three previous editions, the 4th European Data Protection Law Summer School will, under the title ‘Advancing (with) EU data protection’, notably address:

  • Key features of EU’s primary and secondary law, and its fundamental rights dimension;
  • The GDPR: Status of implementation and open questions;
  • Obligations of data controllers and processors;
  • Data subject rights;
  • Data protection authorities and the role of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB);
  • International data transfers, with particular attention to EU – United States (US) data transfers;
  • The ‘Law Enforcement’ Data Protection Directive;
  • Data protection and humanitarian action;
  • E-privacy: Quo vadis?;
  • Towards post-Brexit European data protection.
